Food in Ancient Greece

Along the coastline, soil was not fertile in ancient Greece. They grew olives, grapes, figs and nuts. They kept goats for milk and cheese and they grew wheat to make bread. Fish and seafood were popular as was wine with many meals. Red meat was rarely eaten because it was mostly used for religious sacrifice. In some of the larger Greek cities where  people were more wealthy, meat could be purchased in cook shops. The Greek diet was pretty simple and it was based mainly on wine and bread. A typical meal for someone living in ancient Greece may consist of bread that is dipped in wine. Dinner may include this as well as fruits, veggies, and fish. When people did enjoy red meat, it was usually on a religious holiday.
